Mavreeso Campground: San Juan Forest
Location: Near Dolores, Colorado
Location and Directions. Mavreeso is one of three campgrounds along the West Dolores Road (Forest Rd. 535), which branches north from Colorado Highway 145 about 13 miles northeast of Dolores. The road follows the West Dolores River almost to its headwaters in the Lizard Head Wilderness. Side roads lead into the back country. After 32 miles, the road rejoins the highway 6 miles north of Rico. The road has a gravel surface, but the last 6 miles are steep, narrow, and not recommended for trailers.
Overview and Attractions
Located on the West Fork of the Dolores River. Parking for fishermen is available near the campground. There are several parcels of private land along the river, so please stay on the trail and don't trespass. Mountain biking is available on Forest Development Roads #532 and #535. Forest Service Trail #624 is 2.0 miles south of the campground.
Mavreeso Campground Facilities
There are 14 campsites, mostly level and close to the river. Several of the sites have shady tent areas beneath spruce and fir tree. There are pull-throughs for RVs. A sanitary dumping station is near one of the toilets. There is water, trash pickup, and accessible vault toilets.
All campsites have tables that accommodate wheelchairs and five have electricity. There is one group picnic site and four group campsites. For information on reservation of the day-use or overnight 30-person group area, call (970) 882-2294.
